United States – ½ Dollar (Stone Mountain Memorial) – 1925

In the 1920’s, the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) came up with a proposal to build a memorial to three Confederate figures, Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson, carved into Stone Mountain in Georgia. In order to fund this memorial, 50 cent commemorative coins such as this one were produced and sold. Recently, proposals have been made to remove the carving on Stone Mountain, but none of them have received approval from the Georgia state government.
