Spain – 5 Pesetas – Alfonso XII – 1885

Alfonso XII was the last king of Spain to die while on the throne. However, his reign was very tumultuous. His mother ruled Spain before him, but she was deposed and a republic was established. A military coup against that republic restored the monarchy, and Alfonso XII returned to Spain to become its king. When Alfonso XII died, he had no children, but his wife gave birth to a son soon afterwards, who became Alfonso XIII.
