Mexico – 5000 Pesos – 1988 (Oil Industry)
In 1938, Mexican President Lázaro Cárdenas nationalized his country’s mineral and oil industries. This prompted protests from the US, the UK, and the Netherlands, since companies based in these countries owned oil facilities in Mexico. However, the Mexican state oil company, PEMEX, helped Mexico become one of the largest oil exporting countries in the world. Today, March 18th, the day oil was nationalized, is a civic holiday in Mexico.
