Hungary – 5 Pengő – Miklós Horthy – 1943 (Birthday)

Originally an admiral, Miklós Horthy proclaimed himself the regent of Hungary after WWI – “the kingdom without a king, ruled by an admiral without a navy”, since Hungary’s post-war borders made it landlocked. He ruled Hungary during the interwar years, during which he aligned Hungary with Hitler’s Germany. However, during WWII, Horthy became increasingly opposed to Hitler, so he was forced out of office in 1944.
