France – 1 Sol – 1793

After the French Revolution, new coins were introduced. The reigning monarch was removed, and symbols of the revolution were put in his place. These included a phrygian cap, representing liberty, and scales, representing justice. The reverse includes a representation of the Declaration of the Rights of Man, proclaiming that “les hommes sont égaux devant la loi” – “all men are equal under law”.
