Cambodia – 500 Riels – Norodom Sihanouk – 1994

Norodom Sihanouk was the first king of independent Cambodia. He abdicated in favor of his father in order to participate in politics. Sihanouk was elected prime minister, after which he ruled the country under a one-party state. A coup led to his ouster, so he fled to China and set up a government in exile. He returned after the victory of the Khmer Rouge in the Cambodian Civil War, who appointed his as figurehead head of state. However, Sihanouk came to oppose the Khmer Rouge regime, so he was removed from office and placed under house arrest. Eventually, he joined the Cambodian resistance, which appointed him as head of state yet again. In 1993 he was restored as king.
